Many people call him "The Big Easy." This nickname comes from his large size and his very smooth golf swing. He has won more than 70 professional tournaments during his long career.

Els won four major championships, which are the most important contests in golf. He won the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997. He also won The Open Championship in 2002 and 2012. He is one of only six golfers to win both of those big titles twice.

Learning the game started at a very young age for Els. His father, Neels, taught him how to play at a golf course in Germiston.

Ernie played many other sports like rugby, cricket, and tennis too. However, he became very good at golf by the age of 14. He decided to focus only on golf after that. In 1984, he won the Junior World Golf Championship. He even beat a future star named Phil Mickelson in that contest.

Els turned into a professional golfer in 1989. He began playing on the Southern Africa Tour in 1991. His first big professional win came in 1992 at the South African Open. A few years later, he won his first major title at the 1994 U.S. Open. He had to play an extra 18 holes to win that contest. This was a very exciting way to finish a tough tournament. He continued to win many more games all over the world.

His career had many amazing highlights and big numbers. He won the World Match Play Championship a record seven times. He was also the first player on the European Tour to earn over €25,000,000.

In 2004, he was part of the "Big Five." This was a group of five great players who ruled golf. This group included Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, and Phil Mickelson. They stayed near the top of the world rankings for many years.

Even when things were hard, Els kept working very hard. He once injured his knee while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. He had to miss many months of golf because of it. He also faced many close losses in major tournaments. Even so, he won the Honda Classic in 2008 after a long wait. In 2011, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. This shows that he is one of the best players ever.
