Ernest Lawrence was a famous American scientist. He studied how tiny parts of matter move. In 1929, he saw a drawing in a book. The drawing showed a way to push particles in a straight line. Lawrence wanted a smaller machine. He had a new idea for a circular path.

He used a magnet to guide particles in a spiral. This new machine was called a cyclotron. The cyclotron could make particles move with much more power. Lawrence built many cyclotrons. Some were very big and cost a lot of money.

His work helped many people. He used his machines to study medicine. During World War II, he helped separate uranium. He used special machines called calutrons for this job.

One huge plant was built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Lawrence helped start large science labs. Two labs in California are named after him today. In 1939, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Scientists even named a new element lawrencium to honor him.
