By the end of 1943, he had performed approximately 1,500 deck landings on 22 different carriers. His aerodynamic research provided critical data for the United States Army Air Forces. General Jimmy Doolittle requested help because American fighters struggled at high speeds. During dives, certain planes encountered compressibility, where air behaves differently at high speeds. Brown tested the P-38 Lightning, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-51 Mustang. His tests showed the Mustang had a maneuvering limit of Mach 0.78. This was higher than the P-38 at Mach 0.68 and the P-47 at Mach 0.71.

Brown was also a pioneer in early helicopter and supersonic research. In 1945, he worked with the Aerodynamics Flight to study Sikorsky R-4B Hoverfly helicopters. He was also selected for the Miles M.52 supersonic research programme. Although the project was cancelled by the government in 1945, Brown flew aircraft incorporating its components. His life's work bridged the gap between early flight and the modern era of high-speed jets and helicopters.
