This mineral grows in shapes called prisms. A prism is a solid shape with flat sides. One side of the epidote prism is longer than the others. This is why its name means "increase." Many crystals have lines on their faces. They can also grow as twins.

The color of the stone changes with iron. More iron can change its color and weight. Some epidote is very clear. People sometimes cut clear green crystals into gemstones. It is also used in pretty rocks like Unakite.

Epidote forms in many types of rock. It is often found in marble. It can also come from hot water moving through rocks. This is called hydrothermal alteration. This means hot water changes other minerals into epidote. You can find it in many places. It is in Alaska and Brazil. It is also in Norway and Connecticut.
