They can come in many colors. You might see them in green, black, white, or blue. Some are even yellow or brown. They often grow in long shapes. These shapes look like needles or prisms.

These minerals have a special build. They are made of double chains. These chains are like tiny I-beams.

In these chains, silicon and oxygen atoms link together. Metal ions like iron or magnesium help hold the chains. This structure can have gaps. These gaps make the mineral break in straight lines. We call these lines cleavage planes.

Amphiboles form in different ways. They can grow in igneous rocks. These are rocks made from hot, melted magma. They also form in metamorphic rocks. These rocks change when they are squeezed or heated. One common type is hornblende. It is a very common mineral in many rocks. Some amphiboles are also called asbestos. These can be blue or brown. They often look like thin fibers.
