Serpentine subgroup

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Serpentine is a group of minerals. They are often green, brown, or spotted. The name comes from a Latin word for snake. This is because they can look scaly or smooth like a snake.

These minerals form through a way called serpentinization. This happens when water changes other rocks. For example, water can turn olivine into serpentine. This often happens deep in the Earth.

Serpentine minerals have the same chemical makeup. However, their atoms are arranged in different ways. These are called polymorphs. There are three main types. Antigorite and lizardite are flat or platy. Chrysotile is fibrous, which means it looks like tiny threads. Chrysotile is a type of asbestos.

People use serpentine in many ways. Some types are used as gems. People call these "precious" serpentines. They make jewelry or carvings. For example, someone once carved a small statue called a Budai.

Other types are used for building or roads. In California, serpentine is the official State Rock.
