Entropy (energy dispersal)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

What is entropy? Some people call it disorder. But that word can be confusing. Many scientists prefer to think about energy dispersal. This means energy spreading out from one spot.

Imagine a hot frying pan. The heat spreads away from it. This happens on its own. Or think about air leaving a flat tire. The air moves to fill more space. These are ways energy moves from being in one place to being spread out.

Scientists use entropy as a yardstick. It measures how much energy spreads over time. We can look at microstates to understand this. A microstate is a way to arrange all the energy in a system. When energy disperses, there are more ways to arrange it. This means there are more microstates.

In chemistry, this happens with molecules. When substances mix, the energy spreads out even more. The molecules move into a larger space. This makes the energy more spread out than before. This spreading is a natural way for things to change.
