While these were later identified as nuclear fission products, the discovery was groundbreaking. He developed the Fermi age equation to describe these processes. This work showed how energy could be released from the very center of an atom.

During World War II, Fermi's life changed as he moved to the United States. He left Italy to escape new racial laws that affected his Jewish wife, Laura Capon.
