Your body has a special team of parts called glands.

These glands make chemical messages called hormones. The glands do not have tubes to carry these messages. Instead, they let hormones go directly into your blood. The blood then carries the messages to other parts of your body.

Many different glands work in this way. The pituitary gland sits at the base of your brain. It helps control many other glands. One hormone it makes is growth hormone. This hormone helps your bones and muscles grow.

In your neck, you have the thyroid gland. It is shaped like a butterfly. This gland helps control how your body uses power. The pancreas is in your belly. It helps control the amount of sugar in your blood. Two hormones, insulin and glucagon, do this work.

Other glands are also very important. The adrenal glands sit above your kidneys. They help you react to stress. The gonads, like ovaries or testes, help your body change during puberty. All these parts work together to keep you healthy.
