It is the most crowded emirate in the whole country. The city of Dubai sits right on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The land stretches far inland and touches many other places. To the south is Abu Dhabi, and to the northeast is Sharjah. It also sits near Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and the country of Oman.

Dubai is organized into nine different sectors. Some of these areas are busy urban cities where many people live. Other sectors are more rural and quiet. These sectors are further split into 224 different communities. One special area is called Hatta, which is an exclave. Hatta sits about 134 km east of the main city of Dubai. It is surrounded by Oman, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah.

History shows how Dubai changed over many years. In the 1800s, the region was known for finding pearls. This business was very important for trade. In 1901, Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum made Dubai a free port. This meant there were no taxes on imports or exports. This helped many merchants move to the area to trade. By 1908, about 10,000 people lived in Dubai. Later, the pearl business crashed because of new pearls from Japan.

New wealth arrived when people found oil in the ground. An oil contract was signed in 1937, but oil was not found until 1966. This happened at the Fateh oil field. In 1971, the different emirates joined to form the United Arab Emirates. The Al Maktoum family has ruled Dubai since 1833. Today, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the ruler. The ruler of Dubai also serves as the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

Many people work in Dubai, including many foreign labourers. The Dubai Police Force was started in 1956 to keep the area safe.

They are known for using a fleet of exotic cars. While the area is a busy hub, there are serious challenges. Some groups have used the city to hide money from crimes. There have also been reports about the hard lives of some workers. The government has denied many of these claims of injustice.
