Elliot Norton was a very important man in the world of theater. He spent fifty years writing about plays for newspapers in Boston. People called him "The Dean of American Theatre Critics." This title showed how much everyone respected his smart ideas. He wrote about 6,000 different shows during his long career.

He was not just a writer who watched from the seats. He was a guide who helped artists make their work shine. Many famous directors and writers valued his opinions very highly.

Norton used a special way of working called "play doctoring." This means he gave helpful advice to make a show better. In his time, many plays had "tryouts" in Boston before moving to New York.

Norton would watch these early shows and offer suggestions. He helped shape the famous musical Oklahoma! during its tryout. He also helped the writer Neil Simon improve his play, The Odd Couple. Simon said Norton's ideas helped fix a part that felt "flat."

Norton grew up in Boston and loved stories from a young age. He went to the Boston Latin School and then to Harvard College.

At Harvard, he took a special class for people who write plays. He loved watching live acting so much that it gave him chills. One memory he had was from a play called Hamlet in 1922. He began his job as a reporter for The Boston Post in 1926. By 1934, he was the editor for the drama section there.

His career moved through many different types of media. He worked for The Boston Post and the Boston Herald American.

He also hosted a television show called Elliot Norton Reviews. This show ran on WGBH-TV for 1,100 episodes from 1958 to 1982. Norton won many big prizes for his hard work. He received a Special Tony Award in 1971 for his commentary. He also won a Peabody Award for his television show.

Even after he stopped working, his name stayed in the theater. In 1982, people created the Elliot Norton Awards to honor great theater in Boston. He was also put into the Theater Hall of Fame in 1988.

Norton lived a very long life and reached 100 years old. He moved to Florida to be near his family later in life. He died in 2003, but his impact on theater is still felt today. His life shows how one person's words can help art grow.
