Elizabeth Loftus is a famous scientist. She studies how people remember things. She found that our minds can make mistakes. This is called a false memory. A false memory is a memory of something that did not really happen.

Loftus did many tests to learn this. In one test, she showed students videos of car crashes. She asked them how fast the cars went. She used different words in her questions. If she used the word "smashed," people thought the cars went faster. If she used the word "collided," they thought the cars were slower. This showed that the words we hear can change our memories.

She also studied how stories can change our minds. In one study, she told people a fake story. The story said they once met Pluto at Disneyland. About one third of the students believed the story was true!

Her work is very important for lawyers. She has helped in over 300 court cases. She explains how witnesses might remember things wrong. This helps people find the truth in court. She has won many big awards for her work.
