Eliot Ness was a prominent American law enforcement agent. He became a famous figure during the era of Prohibition. Prohibition was a period when the sale of alcohol was illegal in the United States. Ness is best remembered for leading a specialized team to fight organized crime in Chicago. His work targeted the operations of the notorious crime boss Al Capone. Through his efforts, Ness became a symbol of incorruptible law enforcement.

Ness was born on April 19, 1903, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, Peter and Emma, were Norwegian immigrants who ran a bakery. Ness attended Christian Fenger High School before studying at the University of Chicago. He graduated in 1925 with degrees in political science and business administration. Before entering law enforcement, he worked as an investigator for the Retail Credit Company of Atlanta. In 1929, he studied criminology at the university. His teacher was August Vollmer, a famous police reformer. Vollmer’s ideas about professionalizing the police influenced Ness throughout his entire career.

In 1926, Ness joined the Bureau of Prohibition. This agency had about 1,000 agents working across the country. His brother-in-law, Alexander Jamie, was an agent for the Bureau of Investigation. This influence helped Ness enter the field of law enforcement. By 1930, the Chicago Crime Commission wanted President Herbert Hoover to take down Al Capone. While some agents investigated Capone for tax evasion, a new plan was created. Attorney General William D. Mitchell and President Hoover devised a strategy to use a small, specialized team. This team would target illegal breweries and supply routes.

U.S. attorney George E.Q. Johnson chose the 27-year-old Ness to lead this new squad. Ness claimed that a group known as the Secret Six helped secure his appointment. To ensure success, Ness needed a team that could not be corrupted by criminals. He reviewed the records of all Prohibition agents to find the most reliable men. He started with a group of six agents and eventually grew the team to about ten. Because these men refused all bribes and threats, the press gave them a nickname. A reporter for the Chicago Daily News called them "The Untouchables."

The Untouchables used advanced methods like wiretapping to gather evidence. They began raiding illegal breweries and stills in March 1931. These operations caused massive financial damage to Al Capone's criminal empire. Within six months, the raids destroyed bootlegging operations worth an estimated $500,000. In modern value, that is nearly $9.9 million. The raids also resulted in over $2 million in lost income for Capone. Ultimately, the team's work helped cost Capone more than $9 million in lost revenue.

Ness's work led to major legal consequences for Capone. In June 1931, Capone was indicted for 5,000 violations of the Volstead Act. However, a judge decided to pursue a tax evasion case instead. On October 17, 1931, Capone was convicted on three counts of tax evasion. He was sentenced to eleven years in prison. In May 1932, Ness was among the agents who escorted Capone from jail to a train. This was the only time the two men ever met in person.

After Prohibition ended in 1933, Ness held several different roles. He served as an alcohol tax agent in the "Moonshine Mountains" of the South. In 1935, he became the Safety Director for Cleveland, Ohio. In this role, he managed both the police and fire departments. He attempted to modernize the city's police force using August Vollmer's professional methods. Later, he worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C. He also held positions in the corporate world, including a role at the Diebold Corporation.

Ness's later years were marked by financial struggle. He worked various jobs, including a bookstore clerk and a wholesaler of electronic parts. He was working for the Guaranty Paper Corporation when he died. He died of a heart attack on May 16, 1957, at the age of 54. Shortly before his death, he collaborated on a memoir titled *The Untouchables*. The book was published after he passed away and sold 1.5 million copies. This book launched his posthumous fame and inspired many movies and TV shows.
