The Elephanta Caves are a group of amazing rock-cut temples.

They are located on Elephanta Island in the Mumbai Harbour. This island is part of the Indian state of Maharashtra. These temples are special because they were carved directly into solid basalt rock. Because they are so important, UNESCO named them a World Heritage Site. Many people visit the island to see the incredible art.

Most of the caves are dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

The caves use a layout called a mandala pattern. This pattern helps organize the different temples and shrines. The artwork shows many different Hindu ideas and stories. Some carvings even show a mix of Hindu and Buddhist symbols. Most of the art is made in high relief. This means the figures stand out from the flat rock walls.

History tells us these caves were built a long time ago.

Many scholars believe the work was finished by about 550 CE. Some people think the Rashtrakuta Dynasty built them. Other thinkers suggest different Hindu dynasties were responsible. The name "Elephanta" actually came from Portuguese explorers. They found elephant statues on the island and used that name. Before they arrived, the main cave was an active place of worship.

To reach the Great Cave, visitors must walk up 120 steep steps. The island has two hills with a deep ravine between them. One hill has the five Hindu caves on its western side. The other hill is called Stupa Hill because it has Buddhist mounds. You can reach the island by taking a ferry from the Gateway of India. The island is a beautiful place with mango and tamarind trees.
