Most of the caves honor the Hindu god Shiva. Many carvings show stories about him. The most famous carving is the Trimurti. It is a large statue with three faces. This statue is over 5 feet tall. The faces show different parts of Shiva. One face shows him as a creator. Another face shows him as a protector. The third face shows him as a destroyer.

Other carvings show Shiva in many ways. One shows him as the Lord of Dance. Another shows him as the Lord of Yoga. Some carvings also show the goddess Parvati. The caves were built a long time ago. Many scholars think they were finished by 550 CE. Today, many people visit the island to see the art. You can take a ferry to get there.
