Electroplating is a way to coat a solid object with metal.

It uses a direct electric current to move metal. This process can make objects look shiny or bright. It also helps parts resist wear and rust.

To start, you need an electrolytic cell. This is a setup that uses electricity to cause changes. The object you want to coat is called the cathode. It is the negative part. You also need an electrolyte. This is a liquid made of a salt solution. The liquid contains metal ions, which are tiny, charged bits of metal.

Next, you add an anode. This is the positive part. It is often made of the same metal you want to use for the coating. When the power turns on, the metal moves. The metal from the anode dissolves into the liquid. Then, the metal ions in the liquid move toward the cathode. They stick to the object and form a new layer.

Luigi Valentino Brugnatelli invented this in 1805. Later, people used it to make huge sculptures. They even used it to make parts for computers and cars.
