Electric dipole moment

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Everything in our world has electrical charges. Some parts have a positive charge. Other parts have a negative charge.

Electric dipole moment definition

An electric dipole moment measures how these charges are split apart. It shows how much a system has polarity. Polarity is just a way to say the plus and minus sides are different. We can measure this with units called coulomb-metres. Scientists also use a unit called the debye.

Imagine a tiny pair of opposite charges. They are very close together. We can draw an arrow from the negative charge to the positive one. This arrow shows the direction of the dipole.

Electric dipole torque uniform field

If you put this dipole near an electric field, it will feel a twist. This twist is called torque. The torque tries to line the dipole up with the field.

Even if the charges are very far away, the dipole still acts like a small field. This field can reach out to other things. Some very tiny particles might have this split too. We have not seen them yet because they are so small. They might not even have a real gap between their charges.
