A dipole is a set of two opposite sides.

In electricity, these sides are positive and negative charges. They stay close to each other. Scientists use a term called a dipole moment to measure them. This tells us how strong the dipole is. It also shows which way it points. The direction goes from the negative side to the positive side.

Magnets also act like dipoles. A small magnet can be seen as a loop of electric current. This loop makes a magnetic field. A magnetic dipole moment measures this strength. It depends on the size of the loop and the current.

Dipoles can happen in molecules too. Some molecules have a permanent dipole. This happens when one part of the molecule pulls on electrons more than another.

Water is a good example. It is a bent molecule. Because it is bent, the charges do not cancel out. Other molecules, like carbon dioxide, are straight. Their charges cancel out, so they have no dipole.

What is Nepedia?

A free, ad-free encyclopedia for children. Every article is written at five reading levels, so the same page works for a five-year-old and a fifteen-year-old — use the level switcher above to see this one change. No account needed to read.
