The climate in Ekiti is tropical and follows two distinct seasons. The rainy season occurs from April to October. The dry season lasts from November to March. During the dry season, the northeast trade winds create the Harmattan. Temperatures generally range between 21°C and 28°C. Humidity levels remain quite high throughout the year. The vegetation changes based on where you are in the state. The southern regions contain tropical forests. The northern peripheries consist of a drier Guinean forest–savanna mosaic. This environment supports diverse wildlife. You may find mona monkeys, forest buffalo, and grey parrots. A small troop of about 20 chimpanzees lives in the Ise Forest Reserve.

History and the origins of the Ekiti people involve two main theories. One school of thought links the Ekiti to the city of Ile-Ife. This story suggests the children of Olofin journeyed from Ife. They eventually settled in a land of many hills. They called this land "Ile olokiti," which later became Ekiti. A second theory is more grounded in historical records. It suggests the ancestors of the Ekiti met established elders in Ife. These include figures like Agbonniregun, who is known as Baba Ifa. Descendants of these figures settled in Ekiti. This connection is why Ado is called "Ado ni ile Ifa." The state has seen many changes over the centuries.

In the 1800s, the region faced significant political conflict. The area was once part of the Ibadan imperialist movement. This led to the formation of the Ekiti Confederacy in the late 1800s. From 1877 to 1893, the EkitiParapo War took place. This is also known as the Kiriji War. It was fought between the Ekiti Confederacy and the Oyo-Ibadan forces. The war was led by Fabunmi Okemesi-Ekiti. It ended in a stalemate brokered by the British. Eventually, the area was incorporated into the British Southern Nigeria Protectorate. This was later merged into British Nigeria in 1914.

Modern Ekiti State was officially created in 1996. It was carved out from a part of Ondo State. Before this, the area was part of the Western State. Ekiti is a small but highly significant state in Nigeria. It is the 31st largest state by area. It is the 30th most populous state. The estimated population was nearly 3.5 million in 2022. Ekiti is also famous for its high level of education. It holds the highest number of professors in Nigeria. The state also ranks 13th in the national Human Development Index. These numbers show the state's importance in the country.

The economy of Ekiti is partially based on agriculture. Farmers grow crops such as yams, rice, cocoa, and cassava. Logging and tourism serve as important minor industries. In March 2022, the state adopted a new official symbol. Governor Kayode Fayemi announced the Obeche tree as the state tree. This tree is known scientifically as Triplochiton scleroxylon. It was chosen for its economic and cultural significance. The state is also divided into sixteen Local Government Areas. These include Ado-Ekiti, Ikere, Oye, and Ijero. Each area helps manage the diverse needs of the population.
