Colbert was actually searching for fossils of a basal theropod dinosaur named Coelophysis. He believed that no other large vertebrates were present in that quarry. Because of this, his crew did not open most of the plaster jackets they found. They shipped many of these blocks to the American Museum of Natural History instead. 
The fossil remained hidden in those blocks for a long time. In 2004, a graduate student named Sterling Nesbitt began preparing the old jackets. He was also looking for Coelophysis specimens at the museum. When he found the remains, he immediately realized this was not a dinosaur. He worked to track down the other blocks from that same quarry area. In January 2006, Nesbitt and curator Mark Norell named the species Effigia okeeffeae. They chose this name to honor the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. She had spent many years living at Ghost Ranch.
Scientists have used biomechanical studies to understand how Effigia lived. By looking at the structure of the jaws, they can guess what it ate. The jaws of Effigia were relatively weak. This suggests that it was a specialist herbivore. A specialist herbivore is an animal that focuses on a specific type of food. Based on its sharp beak, researchers believe it was a browser. It likely fed on softer plant material found in its environment.
