Lagerpetids were a group of small reptiles from the Triassic period. 

These animals were built very lightly. Some species had small teeth and a toothless beak on their snout. Most fossils found are leg bones. These bones help us see how they were built. Their thigh bones, called femurs, were thin and S-shaped. The bone near the knee had a special bump. This bump is called a crista tibiofibularis. 
Their shin bones were also very long and thin. The ankle was made of two bones that were fused together. This means they grew into one single piece. This is a trait seen in pterosaurs and some early dinosaurs. The first lagerpetid known to science was named Lagerpeton. It was found in Argentina by Alfred Sherwood Romer in 1971.

The ankle of a lagerpetid was composed of two primary bones. These are the astragalus, which connects to the tibia and fibula, and the calcaneum, which connects only to the fibula. In lagerpetids, these two bones were co-ossified, meaning they were fused together. This fusion is a trait also seen in pterosaurs and some early dinosaurs. The astragalus also featured two small, pyramid-shaped structures. One of these is a posterior ascending process, which is a structure entirely unique to the lagerpetid family. Additionally, the calcaneum had a concave facet for the fibula and lacked a large rearward bump.
Lagerpetid fossils have been discovered across several continents. 
The history of studying lagerpetids has evolved alongside new technology.
