Edwin Hubble was a famous American astronomer who changed how we see the universe.

Before his work, most people thought the Milky Way was the entire universe. They believed other fuzzy shapes in the sky were just clouds of dust and gas called nebulae. Hubble proved these objects were actually entire galaxies located far beyond our own. This discovery helped start new fields like extragalactic astronomy. His work showed us that the universe is much bigger than we ever imagined.

Hubble used a special way to measure how far away things are in space. He looked for Cepheid variables, which are stars that pulse or flicker in a steady way. A scientist named Henrietta Swan Leavitt had found that these stars have a special relationship between their brightness and their pulse time. By watching these stars, Hubble could figure out the distance to far-off galaxies.

He used the massive Hooker Telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory to see these distant stars. This method allowed him to prove that the Andromeda Nebula was actually a separate galaxy.

Hubble's journey to becoming a scientist was not a straight path. He was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. In his younger years, he was known more as a great athlete than a scholar. He played football, baseball, and ran track. He even led the University of Chicago basketball team to a Big Ten Conference title in 1907. Because of a promise to his father, he actually studied law at Oxford University for three years. He only returned to science after his father passed away in 1913.

In 1929, Hubble made another huge discovery about how the universe moves. He found that galaxies are moving away from Earth. He noticed that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it seems to move. This finding is known as Hubble's law.

This discovery implies that the universe is expanding, meaning it is growing larger all the time. While Georges Lemaître had proposed this idea two years earlier, Hubble's observations provided famous proof. His work helped confirm what Albert Einstein's equations had suggested about the cosmos.

Today, we remember Hubble through many different things. His name is on the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits high above the Earth. There is even a model of this telescope in his hometown of Marshfield, Missouri. He also created a way to group galaxies by their shapes. This system is called the Hubble sequence, and scientists still use it today.
