He lived during the 19th century and toured throughout the United States. He also performed in the major capitals of Europe. Many people consider him the greatest American actor of his century. He was highly skilled at performing the plays of William Shakespeare. His career involved both performing on stage and managing famous theaters. He is remembered for his incredible talent and his complex family history.

Booth's professional life followed a path of steady growth and immense skill. He made his stage debut in Boston on September 10, 1849. He played the character Tressel in a version of Richard III. His first appearance in New York City occurred on September 27, 1850. He played the role of Wilford in a play called The Iron Chest. After his father died in 1852, Edwin began a worldwide tour. He visited Australia and Hawaii during this time. He eventually gained great acclaim in Sacramento, California, in 1856. He later became a manager of the Winter Garden Theatre from 1863 to 1867.

Booth was famous for many different roles and performance types. His most signature role was the title character in Hamlet. He once performed Hamlet for a record-breaking "hundred nights." This record stood until 1922 when John Barrymore played the role for 101 performances.

He also played Richard II, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, and Benedict in Much Ado About Nothing. In 1874, he performed the role of Othello in Chicago. In May 1876, he performed several different Shakespearean roles on consecutive days in Toronto. This demonstrated his incredible range and stamina as a performer.

His family history was deeply connected to the world of acting. He was born in Bel Air, Maryland, into the Anglo-American Booth family. His father was the famous English actor Junius Brutus Booth. Edwin had two brothers, Junius Jr. and John Wilkes Booth. The brothers often competed for fame and achievement.

In 1864, the three brothers appeared on the same stage together. They performed in Julius Caesar, with Edwin playing Brutus. This benefit performance helped fund a statue of William Shakespeare in Central Park.

Tragedy and infamy deeply affected his life and career. His brother, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. This event forced Edwin to leave the stage for many months. He disowned his brother and refused to speak his name in his house.

Despite this, he returned to the stage in January 1866. He also faced personal danger during his career. In 1879, a man named Mark Gray fired two shots at him in Chicago. The shots missed Booth and hit the stage floor instead.

Booth achieved significant success in business and personal ventures. In 1869, he opened Booth's Theatre in Manhattan.

This was an elaborate structure, though it faced financial struggles. The Panic of 1873 eventually led to the theater's bankruptcy in 1874. Later, he built a grand summer estate in Rhode Island called Boothden.

Completed in 1884, this Queen Anne Revival style house featured a dance hall and a windmill. He also founded The Players, a private club for artists, in 1888.

His life also included moments of quiet heroism. In late 1863 or early 1864, Booth saved Robert Todd Lincoln. Robert was the son of President Abraham Lincoln. While on a train platform in New Jersey, Robert fell into a narrow space. Booth vigorously seized the young man's coat collar and pulled him to safety. This act provided Edwin with comfort after his brother's actions against the President. He died on June 7, 1893, in his apartment at The Players clubhouse.
