Fencing is a sport where people use swords. Edoardo grew up in a family of fencers. His father was a master teacher. His father even taught him to use his left hand. This made him a hard opponent to beat.

Edoardo was a great winner. He won 39 medals in big contests. These were at the Olympics and World Championships. This is more than any other fencer in history. He won one gold medal for his own skill. He also won five gold medals with his team. He won many silver and bronze medals too.

In 1952, he won gold in the épée event. The épée is a type of sword. His brother also won medals at those same games. Together, the brothers won six medals.

Edoardo competed for 25 years. He was 41 years old during the 1960 Olympics. He was the oldest on his team then. He won his 13th Olympic medal at those games. The Olympic group called him the greatest fencer ever.
