Eddie Mabo was a man from the Torres Strait Islands.

He was born in 1936 on Mer Island. Eddie loved his culture. He liked to sing and dance. He also wanted children to learn about their own history. In 1973, he and his wife, Bonita, started a school. It helped children learn their own ways.

Eddie worked many jobs. He worked on boats and in fields. Later, he was a gardener at a university. While working there, he learned something shocking. The law said he did not own his island land. This was not true to him. He felt it was very unfair.

Eddie decided to fight for land rights. He worked with lawyers for ten years. He went to the High Court of Australia. This is a very important court. In 1992, the court ruled in his favor. This decision changed the law for all Indigenous people. It meant they had rights to their land. Eddie died of cancer before he saw the win. But his work helped many people in Australia.
