He is best known as the creator and host of the variety program Toast of the Town. In 1955, the program was renamed The Ed Sullivan Show. It broadcast from 1948 to 1971. This run set a record as the longest-running variety show in U.S. broadcast history. Critics have called it one of the last great American television shows. It remains a significant piece of American pop culture memory.

A typical episode functioned as a diverse showcase of talent.

The show featured a wide range of acts in a single broadcast. These included vaudeville acts like acrobats, jugglers, and magicians. Comedians, singing stars, and theater performers also appeared frequently. The program even included puppets like Topo Gigio or popular athletes. Sullivan often required musical acts to perform live. He preferred live music over lip-syncing, which was a notable standard for the time.

Sullivan's career began long before he reached the television screen. He was born on September 28, 1901, in Harlem, New York City. His family enjoyed music through piano playing and phonograph records. In high school, Sullivan was a standout athlete. He earned 12 athletic letters in football, basketball, and track. He also served as the captain of his baseball team. He eventually moved into journalism, working as a sports reporter. He held positions at several newspapers, including The New York Evening Graphic. He later became a prominent Broadway columnist for the New York Daily News.

His transition to television was driven by the growing medium's potential. In 1948, producer Marlo Lewis convinced CBS to hire Sullivan for a Sunday-night variety show. The show originally broadcast from Maxine Elliott's Theatre on West 39th Street. In 1953, it moved to CBS-TV Studio 50 on Broadway. This location was later renamed the Ed Sullivan Theater. While some critics initially gave him poor reviews, Sullivan's style eventually won over families.

He presented himself as an average man who brought greatness into the home.

Sullivan had a massive impact on the careers of musical icons. He signed Elvis Presley for three appearances in 1956. Although Sullivan was initially wary of Presley's image, he later called him a "decent, fine boy." In 1964, Sullivan made a historic decision to book The Beatles. Their first appearance on February 9, 1964, became the most-watched television program in history up to that point.

He also provided a platform for many Motown acts. The Supremes, for example, appeared on his show 17 times.

One of Sullivan's most significant legacies was his commitment to inclusion. He often booked Black entertainers long before it was fashionable in television.

He featured legends like Louis Armstrong and Pearl Bailey. He also presented more obscure performers he had known in Harlem. Sullivan believed in hiring performers based solely on their abilities. He refused to let race, religion, or politics dictate his casting. He even faced pressure from sponsors to stop booking Black acts. Sullivan resisted this pressure to maintain his diverse lineup.

Sullivan's unique persona also became a part of entertainment history. Some critics described his mannerisms as awkward or stiff.

However, many comedians found humor in his style. Impressionists like Will Jordan and Johnny Carson frequently imitated his posture and nasal voice. Sullivan embraced this, often encouraging impersonators on his own stage. He even appeared as a clown in a 1972 special. His ability to bridge different genres of art helped define the golden age of variety television.
