Eczema herpeticum

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people have skin that is red and sore. This is often called atopic dermatitis. This skin can have tiny breaks in it. Small germs can enter these spots. This can lead to eczema herpeticum. This is a rare and serious infection.

Most cases come from a virus. One is the herpes simplex virus. This is the same germ that causes cold sores. Other viruses can cause it too. The infection makes many small bumps on the skin. These bumps often have a dip in the middle.

This illness can make a child feel very sick. It can cause a fever. It can also make lymph nodes swell. The germs can spread to other parts of the body. They can reach the eyes, lungs, or brain. This can be very dangerous for babies.

Doctors use medicine to treat this. They use antiviral drugs. These drugs help fight the virus. This helps the person get better.

A man named Moriz Kaposi first saw this in 1887. He was a skin doctor from Hungary. This disease can happen at any age. However, it mostly happens to children.
