Economy of India

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The economy of India is a complex, developing mixed economy. A mixed economy means that both the government and private businesses play large roles in managing money and resources. Currently, India is the world's fourth-largest economy by nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country. If you measure by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), which looks at how much goods actually cost locally, India is the third-largest.

This system allows the state to control strategic sectors while letting private companies grow in others.

India's economic mechanism relies heavily on domestic consumption. Nearly 70% of the nation's GDP is driven by people within the country buying goods and services. This makes India the third-largest consumer market on Earth. The economy is also fueled by government spending, investments, and exports. As of 2025, India acts as a major player in global trade. It is the seventh-largest importer and the tenth-largest exporter in the world.

Different sectors provide different strengths to the Indian economy. The service sector is massive, accounting for about 55% of the GDP. Manufacturing is another vital part, making India the world's fifth-largest manufacturer. This sector represents 3.2% of all global manufacturing output.

The digital economy is also a rapidly expanding part of the system. It was valued at US$402 billion in 2022–23. Experts project it could surpass US$1 trillion by 2029.

India has a deep history of economic power. Between 2800 BCE and 1800 BCE, the Indus Valley Civilisation practiced advanced agriculture and urban planning. Later, during the Mughal Empire, India became a global manufacturing leader. Under Emperor Aurangzeb, the empire was a massive economic force. Until 1750, India produced about 25% of the world's industrial output.

They were famous for textiles, shipbuilding, and steel. At one point, India and China together may have accounted for 60% to 70% of world GDP.

Modern Indian economic policy has shifted through several distinct stages. After gaining independence in 1947, India used protectionist policies. This meant the government used heavy regulation to protect local industries. This period was characterized by Dirigism, where the state had extensive control. However, an acute balance of payments crisis in 1991 changed everything. This crisis led to economic liberalisation, which opened the doors to more market-based competition.

Today, India serves a critical role in global healthcare. It is often called the "pharmacy of the world." India supplies approximately one-fifth of the global demand for generic medicines. In the 2023–24 period, it exported pharmaceuticals to over 200 countries. A huge portion of these go to North America and Europe.

While the economy grows, it also faces complex social and structural realities. About 63% of the population lives in rural areas. These rural citizens contribute about 46% of the national GDP. The government also functions as a welfare state, spending 8.6% of its GDP on social services in 2021-22. Interestingly, India's Gini index fell to 25.5 in 2022-23. This number suggests India has become the fourth-most equal country globally in terms of income.
