John H. Johnson started the magazine in Chicago in 1945. His wife, Eunice, chose the name. She thought of dark wood. The first issue sold 25,000 copies. It sold out completely!

Ebony shares news, culture, and fashion. It shows the lives of important Black people. The magazine covers politics and beauty. It also tells stories of success. In the 1960s, it wrote about the civil rights movement. This was a time when people fought for fairness.

Every year, Ebony makes a special list. It is called the "100 Most Influential Blacks in America." This list honors people who make a big impact. It includes stars, leaders, and business owners. Many people on the list have high degrees from college.

Ownership of the magazine has changed. In 2016, a group called Clear View Group bought it. Later, the magazine ran out of money. In 2020, a man named Junior Bridgeman bought it for $14 million. Now, you can read Ebony in a digital format online.
