The name comes from its location. Its islands are in the easternmost part of the Visayas island group. The region consists of three main islands: Samar, Leyte, and Biliran. These islands form the easternmost coasts of the country. The region is bounded by several bodies of water. To the east and north lies the Philippine Sea. The San Bernardino Strait separates Samar from southeastern Luzon. To the west are the Camotes and Visayan seas. In the south, the Bohol Sea is located nearby. The Surigao Strait separates Leyte from northeastern Mindanao.

The climate in the region follows the Coronas system of classification. There are two distinct types of climate present. Type II climate has no dry season. It has a pronounced maximum in rainfall from November to January. This climate affects Samar Island and the eastern part of Leyte. Type IV climate has rain distributed evenly throughout the year. It features a short dry season from February to May. This type is found in western Leyte and parts of Samar. The region faces the Philippine Sea directly. This position makes it very prone to typhoons. These storms often strike at their peak intensities. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, or Super Typhoon Yolanda, hit the region. It became the deadliest and most destructive typhoon in the satellite era.

Administratively, the region is divided into several parts. It contains six provinces: Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, and Southern Leyte.

The land area makes up 7.2% of the total land area of the Philippines.

The geography of the islands provides many natural resources. About 52% of the land is classified as forestland. The remaining 48% is alienable and disposable land. The sea and inland waters are very rich. They provide salt, freshwater fish, and other marine products. Eastern Visayas is one of the main fish-exporting regions in the country. The land also holds many mineral deposits. These include chromite, uranium, gold, and silver. Other minerals include manganese, magnesium, bronze, nickel, clay, coal, limestone, pyrite, sand, and gravel.

Exploration for more geothermal energy continues in Biliran. The many river systems also offer potential for hydroelectric production. Scientists also look at the San Juanico Strait for energy. This strait between Leyte and Samar is a potential source for tidal energy. It could also be used for water current energy.

Infrastructure connects the islands and helps people travel. The islands of Leyte and Samar serve as a link between Luzon and Mindanao. There are nine airports located across the six provinces. The Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban is the main air gateway.
