The show works by following many different family groups. Some families, like the Beales and Fowlers, represent old local traditions. Other families, like the Osmans and Jefferys, show a more diverse community. The creators wanted to show a real cross-section of people. Each character has a special place in the fictional community. This makes the stories feel very connected and real. The creators even used the idea that hurting one person hurts the whole group.

Julia Smith and Tony Holland created the show. They wanted a drama that could attract many viewers. They looked at other shows like Coronation Street for ideas. However, they wanted a younger and more modern feel. They spent months researching the East End of London. They looked for a real spirit and a strong sense of community. This research helped them build the world of Albert Square.

EastEnders is important because it talks about real-life issues. It has dealt with many difficult and serious topics. Some stories have been controversial or even caused many complaints. For example, a baby swap story in 2010 led to 6,000 complaints. However, the show is also praised for spreading awareness. It shows social topics that were not often seen on TV before. This helps people understand the world around them better.
