Earthquake prediction

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Earthquake prediction is a special part of geophysics. Scientists in this field try to name the time, place, and size of future quakes. This is different from forecasting. Forecasting looks at the general danger in an area over many years. There is also earthquake warning. These systems detect a quake as it starts. They give people a few seconds to find safety.

Scientists want to find signs called precursors. A precursor is a strange event that happens before a quake. Some people think animals might sense these signs. Animals can feel P waves. These waves travel much faster than the damaging S waves. They arrive a few seconds before the big shaking starts.

Scientists have looked for these signs for a long time. In the 1970s, many experts were very hopeful. They thought they would find a way to predict quakes soon. By the 1990s, things changed. Many scientists began to doubt if prediction was even possible. One famous claim was for the 1975 Haicheng earthquake. However, a later study said there was no real short-term prediction.

There is a hard choice when it comes to warnings. If scientists warn people and no quake happens, it is a false alarm. False alarms cause panic and cost a lot of money. In 1999, China made tough rules to stop false warnings. This was because many unofficial warnings were not accurate. In Italy, seven people were even convicted after the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. They were not blamed for failing to predict it. Instead, they were blamed for telling people there was no danger. This made people feel too safe to take precautions. Scientists must balance the risk of missed quakes against the cost of false alarms. In Greece, one researcher named Stathis Stiros had a different idea. He said it might be better to spend money on fixing old buildings. He noted that earthquakes in Greece kill fewer than ten people each year. He argued that highway safety could save more lives.
