Unlike pigments, dyes can dissolve in liquids. This is called being soluble. Because they dissolve, they can stick to materials.

People have used dyes for a very long time. Some dyes come from plants like roots and bark. Others come from insects or minerals. In the past, some colors were very rare. People prized colors like Tyrian purple.

Today, most dyes are made in labs. We call these synthetic dyes. They are made from chemicals like petrochemicals. These dyes are popular because they are cheap. They also have bright colors and last a long time.

One famous synthetic dye is called mauveine. William Henry Perkin found it by accident in 1856. This discovery changed how we make color. It even helped doctors find ways to kill germs. Paul Ehrlich used dyes to target sickness in the body. He used a blue dye to fight malaria.
