These small animals live in many parts of Africa. They stay in West Africa and Central Africa. They like to live in places like small rivers and swamps. They also enjoy pools and mangrove areas. Most of them live in forested regions.

This crocodile has a very interesting way of staying safe. Because they are small, they are easy for other animals to catch. To protect themselves, they have heavy armor on their neck, back, and tail. They also have osteoderms, which are bony plates, on their belly.

These crocodiles are also very shy. They are nocturnal, which means they are mostly active at night. During the day, they hide in burrows or under tree roots. They rarely spend time basking in the sun like other crocodiles.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. In 1919, a man named Schmidt described a type called Osteoblepharon osborni. Later, in 1948, a researcher named Inger looked at the specimens. He decided they belonged in the Osteolaemus group. In 1961, the classification changed again. Since then, DNA studies in 2009 and 2015 have helped us understand them better. These studies show there might be three different types of these crocodiles.

There are many facts to know about their lives. An adult can grow to a certain length and weight.

They eat many things like fish, crabs, and even insects. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, fish are their main food. In Nigeria, they mostly eat crabs and snails. When it is the dry season, they often hide in deep holes.

Female dwarf crocodiles work hard to raise their young. They build nests using mounds of wet, decaying plants. The heat from the rotting plants helps the eggs hatch. This happens in about 85 to 105 days.

A mother will guard the nest carefully. She watches over the babies after they hatch. This is important because many animals try to eat the young crocodiles. This cycle helps the species continue in the wild.
