It sits on the northern bank of the Damodar River. The city is located within the Paschim Bardhaman district. The land here is undulating, which means it has many hills and dips. It lies near the Raniganj coalfields, where coal is found in the ground. Durgapur is a very important place for making things in India. People even call it the 'Steel Backbone of Industrial Bengal.'

The city works as a huge hub for manufacturing and technology. It is a famous place for producing steel. Durgapur also makes train wheels for railways. Recently, it has become a center for the IT industry too. This means many people work with computers and software there. The city has a special dry dock for ships. It is the only city in eastern India to have one. This helps the local economy grow very strong.

History shows that people have lived here for a very long time. Hunters used stone tools in this area around 5000 BC. Later, the Damodar-Ajay River Valley saw settled life during the Harappa-Mohenjo Daro civilization. In 1765, Gopinath Chattopadhyay began turning the dense forests into a place where people could live. His descendant, Durgacharan Chattopadhyay, built a colony in the Sagarbhanga region. He even built a Kali temple in 1793. In 1855, a railway station was named Durgapur to honor his work.

Modern Durgapur was a big dream for leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru.

The city was planned in 1955 by Bidhan Chandra Roy, Joseph Allen Stein, and Benjamin Polk. It was chosen to host India's second integrated steel plant. This helped the city grow very quickly after India gained independence in 1947. Many different companies now work here. Some make chemicals, while others make glass or power. The city is now a very developed place for technology.

The weather in Durgapur changes quite a bit during the year. Summers are extremely hot and dry from March to June. During these months, temperatures can go above 45 °C. Then, the monsoon season arrives with very heavy rain. The city gets about 1,320 mm of rain every year. Because it rains so much, some people call it 'Chhota Cherapunji.'
