It is the second largest city in the state. The city sits on the banks of the Damodar River. Its name comes from two words. "Asan" is a type of tree that grows thirty meters tall. "Sol" means land. Together, the name describes the land where these trees grow.

The city is part of a high area called the Chota Nagpur Plateau. It sits between the Damodar and Ajay rivers.

The city is famous for its industry and its minerals. The land is very rich in things like coal and iron. This makes Asansol a very important place for making steel. The IISCO steel plant is a huge part of this work.

It was the first facility like this in India. Now, the plant is being modernized with a very large blast furnace. This helps the city grow even faster. The coal found nearby is also very high quality.

History shows that this region has been important for a long time. Long ago, the Malla dynasty ruled this area for about a thousand years. You can still see their style of building today. There are special temples in the villages of Chhotodighari and Domohani. During the British era, people called the city "Assensole." After India gained independence, the name changed back to Asansol.
