This meant it only used very large, heavy guns. These big guns could hit targets from much further away. The ship also used steam turbine propulsion. In 1902, an expert named P. R. Alger suggested using eight large guns in twin turrets. An Italian architect named Vittorio Cuniberti also wrote about an ideal ship with twelve big guns. In the United Kingdom, Admiral John Fisher was a huge supporter of new technology. He is often called the father of the dreadnought fleet. He helped push the Royal Navy to use these new, powerful designs.

Ships built before this era are known as pre-dreadnoughts. Any battleship built after the Dreadnought was simply referred to as a dreadnought. These massive vessels became powerful symbols of national strength for the countries that built them.

The first was an "all-big-gun" armament scheme. Most older battleships used a mix of many different gun sizes. They had a few heavy guns for long range and many smaller, quick-firing guns for close combat. The dreadnought replaced this mix with a uniform battery of very large, heavy-caliber guns. The second breakthrough was steam turbine propulsion. This new engine system allowed ships to move much faster through the water than older steam engines.

This shift in design happened because naval combat was changing.

In the 1890s, battles often happened at short ranges. Ships would use a "hail of fire" from many small guns to hit targets nearby. However, new technology like long-range torpedoes changed the math of sea battles. Admirals realized they needed to fight at much greater distances to stay safe. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 proved that ships could successfully engage in long-range duels. Heavy guns were much more effective at these distances than the smaller, faster guns of the past.

Using only large guns also made the ships easier to manage.

This is known as logistical simplicity. When a ship uses only one size of heavy ammunition, it is easier to supply the crew. It also makes fire control much more efficient. To aim guns at long range, sailors watch for the splashes made by shells hitting the water. If a ship fires different sizes of guns, it is hard to tell which splash came from which gun. A uniform battery of large guns allowed for much more accurate aiming through salvoes.

Several nations were racing to develop these new designs at the same time.

In 1904, the Imperial Japanese Navy authorized the construction of the battleship Settsu. The United States Navy also began working on the USS South Carolina in 1905. In the United Kingdom, Admiral John Fisher became a major leader in this movement. He is often called the father of the dreadnought fleet because he pushed for these new technologies. These developments sparked a global naval arms race. This competition included the United Kingdom, Germany, and even nations in South America.

As technology improved, the dreadnoughts themselves evolved.
