Many stories in the show come from real police files. The show started as a radio drama in 1949. Later, it moved to television. Some episodes were even made into movies. The name comes from a police term. A dragnet is a way to catch suspects.

Joe Friday has a special badge number. It is 714. In one TV show, he was a sergeant. In another, he was a lieutenant. Jack Webb even worked with real police to help the show. This helped people see police officers as heroes.

After Jack Webb died, the city honored him. They lowered flags to half staff. The LAPD even named a room after him. His badge is now on display at the police academy. People still watch these shows on many TV channels today.
