Dracaena trifasciata

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The snake plant is a tough plant. It grows in tropical West Africa. Many people keep it in their homes. It is easy to care for. It can live with very little sun. It also does not need much water. In the winter, it may only need water once every few months. You must not give it too much water. Too much water can make it rot.

The leaves are long and stiff. They grow straight up from the ground. Some leaves have light gray stripes. These leaves look like snakes. Because of this, people call it the snake plant. They also call it Saint George's sword.

The plant has a special way to stay alive. It uses tiny holes in its leaves called stomata. These holes help the plant breathe. The plant only opens these holes at night. This stops water from escaping in the hot sun. This helps the plant survive dry times.

Some people use the plant for more than looks. It has strong fibers. People once used these fibers to make bowstrings. In South Africa, people use it for ear infections. Be careful with pets. The plant can make dogs and cats sick if they eat it.
