During the Second Anglo-Afghan War, Watson was wounded by a bullet. He also suffered from a fever called enteric fever. After he recovered, he returned to England on a troopship named the HMS Orontes. He later met Sherlock Holmes through a friend named Stamford in 1881. They decided to share rooms at 221B Baker Street.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began creating this famous duo many years ago. Before settling on the name "John Watson," Doyle called the character "Ormond Sacker."

Doyle was likely inspired by one of his own colleagues. The stories have lasted for a very long time. The last work featuring both men was published in 1927. Watson's character is even similar to a narrator in stories by Edgar Allan Poe. This shows how much people enjoyed reading about clever detectives in that era.

There are many specific details about Watson's life and family. Some people believe he was born in 1852 or 1853.

In the stories, Watson mentions he has no close family left in England. Holmes once looked at Watson's old watch to learn about his past. The watch belonged to Watson's father and was then owned by his brother. Holmes used the watch to figure out many things about the brother's life. Watson also had a wife named Mary Morstan. Sadly, Watson later mentions a "sad bereavement" regarding her.

Watson plays a very important role as a biographer. A biographer is someone who writes the history of another person.

Watson wrote down the cases of Sherlock Holmes so the public could know about them. Sometimes Holmes criticized his writing for being too romantic. Holmes preferred to use only cold facts and figures. However, Watson wanted to make the stories interesting for readers. Because of Watson's writing, the adventures of Sherlock Holmes are known all over the world today.
