Down quark

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The down quark is a fundamental building block of our universe. It is an elementary particle, which means it is not made of smaller parts. As a major constituent of matter, it is essential for the existence of the physical world. Down quarks are part of the first generation of matter. They are found in every single known atom. Because of this, down quarks are present in all the everyday matter we interact with.

Down quarks function by combining with other quarks to create composite particles called hadrons. The most common way this happens is within atomic nuclei. In these nuclei, down quarks join with up quarks to form protons and neutrons. A proton is composed of two up quarks and one down quark. A neutron is composed of one up quark and two down quarks. These combinations are the basis for the structure of atoms.

There are different types of hadrons that quarks can form. Some are called baryons, which are particles made of three quarks. Others are called mesons, which are particles made of one quark and one antiquark. The down quark also has an antiparticle called the down antiquark. The antiquark is similar to the down quark, but some of its properties have an opposite sign. The down quark itself is an elementary fermion with a spin of 1/2.

Scientists did not always know about these tiny particles. In the early 20th century, particles like protons and neutrons were thought to be elementary. However, a "particle zoo" emerged as researchers discovered dozens of new particles in the 1950s. In 1961, Murray Gell-Mann and Yuval Ne'eman proposed the Eightfold Way. This was a classification scheme to organize these many hadrons. It used a concept called SU(3) flavor symmetry to group them into isospin multiplets.

In 1964, Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig independently proposed the quark model. This model originally included only three types of quarks: up, down, and strange. For a few years, there was no direct evidence that quarks actually existed. In 1968, experiments at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center changed this. Researchers used deep inelastic scattering experiments to look inside protons. These tests showed that protons had a substructure made of more fundamental particles.

Measuring the mass of a down quark is a complex task. Its bare mass is not perfectly determined, but it likely lies between 4.7 and 5.3 MeV. Because the bare mass is so small, scientists must account for relativistic effects during calculations. Lattice QCD calculations provide a more precise value of approximately 4.8 MeV. Interestingly, the "effective mass" of a quark can change. When quarks are in baryons or mesons, the binding energy from the gluon field increases their mass. For instance, the effective mass of down quarks in a proton is about 3.3 MeV.

The down quark is defined by several specific physical properties. It carries an electric charge of −e. It is also subject to all four fundamental interactions in physics. These include gravitation, electromagnetism, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction. By experiencing these forces, the down quark can participate in the complex systems that govern the universe. From the smallest subatomic structures to the largest atoms, the down quark remains a vital component of reality.
