physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The down quark is a tiny part of matter. It is an elementary particle. This means it is not made of smaller bits. Down quarks are in every atom we know. They are in all the things we touch.

Down quarks join with other quarks. They make things called hadrons. Most often, they join with up quarks. This makes protons and neutrons. A proton has two up quarks and one down quark. A neutron has one up quark and two down quarks.

Two men thought of quarks in 1964. Their names were Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig. They wanted to explain how particles fit together. Later, scientists saw proof of quarks. This happened in 1968 at a place called the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Down quarks have a tiny mass. Mass is how much an object weighs. The mass of a down quark is very small. It has an electric charge. This charge is negative. Down quarks also feel four forces. These forces help things work in our world.
