Down jacket

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A down jacket is a quilted winter garment designed for warmth. In the fashion industry, these items are often called puffer jackets or simply puffers. They use insulation made from the feathers of ducks or geese. The primary function of these feathers is to create air pockets. These pockets trap warm air close to the body. This process makes the jacket an efficient insulator for cold environments.

To understand how these jackets work, one must look at the loft. Loft refers to the fluffiness or volume of the down. Scientists and manufacturers measure this using a term called fill power. Fill power represents the number of cubic inches one ounce of down can fill. For instance, one ounce of 700 fill-power down fills exactly 700 cubic inches. A higher fill power allows a jacket to be lighter and warmer. It also helps the garment compress into a much smaller size. This high warmth-to-weight ratio makes down highly valued by hikers and backpackers.

There are different ways to construct the compartments that hold the feathers. These compartments are known as baffles. One method is called sewn-through construction. Another method is known as box construction. Box construction baffles are considered warmer than sewn-through versions. Additionally, some jackets are labeled as downproof. This means the fabric is designed to prevent feathers from leaking out. While real down offers better compressibility, synthetic down provides better water resistance. Both types of insulation are considered equally durable.

Water presents a significant challenge to the performance of down. If water absorbs into the feathers, the down loses its puffy loft. When the loft is lost, the jacket also loses its ability to retain warmth. To prevent this, some jackets feature a Durable Water Repellent, or DWR, coating. This coating can withstand a light drizzle for about one hour. Other jackets use hydrophobic down, which is down coated with water-repelling material. This helps delay water absorption. If a jacket lacks these features, users can often add them at home using specific products.

The history of the down jacket involves several key inventors and designers. In 1922, an Australian chemist and mountaineer named George Finch wore an early version. His jacket was made from eiderdown and balloon fabric. In 1936, adventurer Eddie Bauer created a jacket after nearly dying from hypothermia. He developed an outer jacket filled with feathers and called it the "skyliner." Bauer was the first to patent, sell, and create this design in 1939. Around the same time, designer Charles James created a high-fashion version in 1937. He called his white satin version the "pneumatic jacket."

Early fashion versions faced some functional difficulties. Charles James's pneumatic jacket was hard for people to replicate. The thick padding made it difficult for the wearer to move their upper body. This issue was eventually fixed by reducing the padding near the armholes and neck. After its debut, the jacket remained popular in outdoor sports for ten years. By the 1940s, the puffer began to change from a tool into a fashion item. It was tailored and marketed to wealthy people as a layer for evening wear.

The 1970s brought a new reimagining of the garment through designer Norma Kamali. She created the "sleeping bag jacket," which was marketed toward women as athleisure. This version featured two coats sewn together with a synthetic down alternative inside. Fashion trends continued to shift through the following decades. In the 1980s, bright neon puffers were popular in Italy. During the 1990s, the jacket surged in popularity among young ravers. In the United States, hip-hop artists also began wearing large puffer jackets during this time.

In recent years, the down jacket has remained a staple of winter fashion. Trends have fluctuated between different styles. Some fashion influencers in 2020 preferred longer, knee-length layers in subtle beige shades. They praised the garment for working with many different outfits. However, pop culture keeps the trend alive through artists like Drake and Kanye West. While some prefer long coats, cropped puffer jackets remain in fashion in 2024. The jacket continues to dominate both functional outdoor use and modern style.
