Douglas Engelbart was an American engineer and inventor. He was a pioneer in computer science. He wanted to use computers to help people solve hard problems. He believed that computers could help humans work together better. This idea was very new in his time. Most people saw computers only as tools for math. Engelbart saw them as ways to boost human intellect.

One of his most famous inventions is the computer mouse. He designed it with a wooden shell. It used two metal wheels to track movement. He worked on this with his lead engineer, Bill English. They applied for a patent for it in 1967. The device was nicknamed the "mouse" because of its tail.

In 1968, Engelbart gave a famous presentation. People call it "The Mother of All Demos." He showed many tools that we use today. He showed bitmapped screens and word processing. He also showed hypertext, which is a way to link information. He even demonstrated a chorded keyboard. This demo showed how computers could help people collaborate.

Engelbart had a very busy and successful career. He worked at SRI International in Menlo Park, California. He also worked at Tymshare and McDonnell Douglas. He earned a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1955. In 1997, he won the ACM Turing Award. In 2000, President Bill Clinton gave him the National Medal of Technology. This is the highest award for technology in the United States.

Many things we do on computers started with his ideas. When you move a pointer on a screen, you use his vision. When you click links on a website, you use hypertext. He wanted to create a way for people to fly through information. He hoped this would help everyone solve important problems. His work changed how humans interact with machines forever.
