These maps help us see how things are spread out. There are two main ways to make them.

One way is called a one-to-one map. In this map, each dot shows one real thing. For example, a dot might show one case of a sickness.

Dr. John Snow used this to track cholera in London. He saw many dots near a water pump. This helped him find the cause of the disease.

The other way is a dot density map. Here, one dot stands for a large group.

In an old map of France, one dot stood for 10,000 people. The dots are spread out in an area. If the dots are close, the area is crowded. If they are far apart, the area is empty.

Today, computers help make these maps very fast. They can use millions of pieces of data to show new patterns.
