She wrote more than 50 novels during her long life. Her books explored many different ideas and feelings. Some stories focused on how people live together in society. Other books looked deeply into the human mind and psychology. She even wrote a special kind of science fiction she called "space fiction." This style explored life in the stars and how worlds grow. Her writing was powerful and made many people stop and think.

Lessing's writing journey had three main parts or phases. In her early years, she wrote about social issues and politics. Her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, was published in 1950. Later, she moved into a psychological phase from 1956 to 1969. This period included her famous book, The Golden Notebook. In her later years, she became interested in spiritual ideas called Sufism. This led to her Canopus in Argos series of space stories. Each phase showed how her ideas grew and changed over time.

Her life began in a place called Persia on October 22, 1919.

Her parents were British, but they moved to Southern Rhodesia when she was six. This place is known today as Zimbabwe. Her family tried to run a farm there, but it was a hard job. They did not have much money, and the farm produced very little. Lessing left school when she was 13 years old. She taught herself many things by reading books about the world. She worked as a nursemaid and a telephone operator before becoming a full-time writer.

Lessing was a very brave and active person in the world. She used her voice to speak against unfair rules like apartheid. Because of her strong beliefs, she was even banned from South Africa and Rhodesia for many years. She once used a fake name, Jane Somers, to write two books. She did this to show how hard it is for new writers to get published. In 2007, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

She was 87 years old when she received this huge honor. This made her the oldest person to ever win that prize.

Many people remember Lessing for her incredible skill and her strong mind. She was even watched by government spies for about twenty years because of her political views. Even when she was older, she never stopped thinking about big questions. She lived in London for much of her adult life. She died in 2013 at the age of 94. Her books, like the Children of Violence series, are still read today. She showed that writing can be a way to study the whole world.
