Doris had a very special idea for dance. She called it "fall and recovery." This idea was about how the body reacts to gravity. Dancers would fall away from their center. Then, they would move to find balance again. She used these moves to show deep feelings. This helped her show how people struggle or find peace.

She made many different kinds of dances. Some were made without any music. In a dance called "Water Study," dancers moved to their own breathing. This made them look like moving water. Other dances were inspired by life in America. One famous dance was called "The Shakers." It was based on a religious group. It used shaking moves to show their way of life.

Doris also wrote a book. It was called "The Art of Making Dances." Many dancers still study her book today. Her ideas about movement are still taught in schools.
