Her work helped her become a household name for many families.

Reed's journey to stardom began with a lot of hard work. She was born Donna Belle Mullenger in Denison, Iowa. She was the oldest of five children in her family. After high school, she moved to California to go to college. She did not plan to be an actress at first. While in college, she performed in many stage productions. Eventually, she signed with a big studio called Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The studio changed her name to Donna Reed, even though she did not like it. She felt the name sounded a bit cold and forbidding.

During World War II, Reed became a popular figure for many soldiers. She was known as a "girl-next-door" type of person. She even personally answered letters from American servicemen serving overseas. She kept about 350 of those letters from the war. In 1946, she starred in the romantic comedy Faithful in My Fashion. Later, she worked on a film about the atom bomb. She helped with the story for that movie, even though she was not in it. She always looked for ways to grow as an artist.

Television brought Reed a new kind of fame in the late 1950s.

She starred in The Donna Reed Show from 1958 to 1966. In this show, she played Donna Stone, a smart and loving mother. Her character was different because she was very assertive and bright. This role earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1963. She also received four Emmy Award nominations for her television work. Many people loved the show because it focused on a loving family.

Outside of acting, Reed was very interested in helping the world. She became a peace activist during the Vietnam War. She helped lead a group called Another Mother for Peace. The group used the slogan that war is not healthy for children. She also worked in politics by supporting different leaders in elections. Later in life, she joined the show Dallas for one season. She even had a legal battle with the production company there. Reed passed away in 1986, leaving behind a large legacy of work.
