The story began in a play written around 1630. This play was by Tirso de Molina. It tells of a wealthy man who tries to trick many women. He often uses disguises to hide his true face. He lives by a famous idea. He thinks he has plenty of time to fix his mistakes later.

In many versions, Don Juan does bad things. He often gambles and even kills a man. This leads to a famous scene. He invites a stone statue to a last supper. In the end, the statue drags him down to hell.
