Don Bluth is a prominent American filmmaker, animator, video game designer, and author. He is widely recognized for his work in hand-drawn animation. Bluth rose to fame through his early career at Walt Disney Productions. Later, he established his own independent animation studio. His work became a major competitor to Disney during the 1980s. This competition helped lead into the era known as the Disney Renaissance.

The process of creating traditional animation involves many complex steps. Artists first create storyboards to map out the visual narrative. Animators then draw individual frames to create the illusion of movement. During the production of The Secret of NIMH, Bluth employed 160 animators. He also introduced the first profit-sharing contract in the animation industry. This allowed workers to share in the financial success of their projects. Bluth also utilized new technology for interactive entertainment. He helped create the Dragon's Lair arcade game using Laserdisc technology. This allowed players to choose paths within a high-quality animated cartoon.

Bluth's career can be divided into several distinct professional stages. He began as an assistant at Disney working on Sleeping Beauty in 1955. He later returned to Disney as an animation trainee. During this time, he worked on projects like Robin Hood and The Rescuers. In 1979, he transitioned to an independent producer by founding Don Bluth Productions. He later moved to Ireland to operate Sullivan Bluth Studios. This move helped boost the animation industry within Ireland. He also worked closely with producer Steven Spielberg during the late 1980s.

Bluth's early life shaped his passion for visual storytelling. He was born on September 13, 1937, in El Paso, Texas. As a child, he rode his horse to local theaters to watch Disney films. He would often go home to copy drawings from Disney comic books. He eventually moved to Utah and later to California. He attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a degree in English literature. These foundational years provided the creative drive for his future film career.

His films have achieved significant commercial and critical milestones. The film An American Tail became a massive hit. It earned $45 million in the United States and over $84 million worldwide. His collaboration with Spielberg on The Land Before Time was also very successful. Another major achievement was the film Anastasia, produced at Fox Animation Studios. This film grossed nearly $140 million worldwide. It became Bluth's most commercially successful production. However, some of his later films, like Titan A.E., faced financial challenges. Titan A.E. cost an estimated $75 million but earned less than $37 million worldwide.

Bluth has also explored various other creative mediums. He designed video games like Space Ace and Dragon's Lair 3D. The latter used cel-shading techniques to mimic a hand-animated look. He has authored books such as The Art of Storyboard and The Art of Animation Drawing. In the 1990s, he even formed a theater troupe called Don Bluth Front Row Theatre. This troupe held productions in his home before moving to a dedicated space in 2012. These diverse projects show his wide range of artistic interests.

Today, Bluth remains dedicated to the preservation of traditional art forms. He launched Don Bluth Studios with the goal of starting a renaissance of hand-drawn animation. He believes there is still a strong audience demand for this style. His current project is an anthology called Bluth's Fables. These short stories are inspired by Aesop's Fables and nursery rhymes. The production process involves pencil tests and tracing. He shares these works with the world through live streams and YouTube.
